How to Identify The Quality of Sublimation Paper

The smoothness of printing
It includes paper feeding and printing performance. Before choosing transfer paper, you should ask the supplier for 10-20 meters of paper samples, the width of the wider easier to identify the quality. The appearance of the paper: First of all, we should pay attention to the tightness of the paper roll, the flatness of unwinding and rewinding. The paper feeding will not be skewed, curled, wrinkled or stained.

The smoothness of the thermal transfer
The heat transfer is divided into flat transfer and roller transfer, but whether it is flat or roller requires sublimation paper is not warped by heat. The thermal flatness performance of the transfer paper depends on the transfer paper coating formula and coating process equipment. Test transfer paper thermal warpage performance of the simple method can be cut 25cm × 25cm transfer paper, print side down to have been warmed to 210 degrees under the flat ironing machine, 2 minutes after the warpage height of less than 5cm will not affect the general transfer production. Some immature transfer paper even heat warp into a barrel-shaped, such transfer paper in the sheet heat transfer will have many problems, the product qualification rate decline.

About the transfer rate
Sublimation paper can be divided into two categories: coated transfer paper and uncoated transfer paper. Coated paper has a high compatibility with ink and is the mainstream category of heat sublimation paper at present. The uncoated transfer paper is relatively inexpensive, but it needs to be used with high concentration and high tension ink. When determining transfer rates, you can do a "parallel experiment". The method is to take the several sublimation paper you need to compare side by side with double-sided tape stick together, and then print together on the printer horizontal 2 cm wide strip CMYK color block, and then wait for 1 hour and heat transfer on the same fabric at the same time. Sublimation paper with high color concentration on the cloth or less residual color on the transfer paper has a higher transfer rate.

How to Choose Sublimation Paper

Ink Capacity and Limits
This is an important factor, higher the ink limit (wet), heavier the paper should be in order to accept moisture from the ink without any disturbances like curling and warping.

Ink Pattern
This explains that the printing of a very complex design artwork that has mixed heavy and light ink input. This is faced with low weight papers, with the occurrence of curling and shifting after pressing. To eliminate this the best solution is using 110gsm or more that accept heavy and light inks.

Roll to Roll, or Roll to Sheet
Calendar heat press prefers low-gsm papers. But in heavy ink, limit and capacity are to be considered wisely. Here we consider the limitations of high capacity production and consequences like warping and curling.

Print Speed
The quality of the paper to be produced depends on what speed it is being printed at. Fast printing produces lightweight paper, slow printing produces thick paper.

Step By Step Instructions for Using Sublimation Paper

Prepare the printer
The first step is to prepare the printer for sublimation printing. Load the sublimation ink and be sure the printhead is clean and ready.

Load the paper
Load the sublimation paper into the printer according to the instructions on the package. The bright white side of the paper should be receiving the image.

Flip the image
On your computer, the image will need to be flipped or reversed (like a mirror image) in order for it to transfer properly onto the garment.
Print. Initiate printing through your computer and ensure that the printer activates.Check the image after printing to ensure it is correct before transferring onto the garment.

Prepare the garment
Sublimation printing does not require the garment to be pretreated. However, for best results it helps to preheat the garment to remove wrinkles and moisture. Press the garment in the heat press for a few seconds before applying the image.

Position the image
Position the image where you would like it to appear on the garment. Then place either a sheet of either teflon or parchment paper. Teflon often comes with your sublimation printer and is designed to be reusable after cleaning.

Press
Press the image down onto the garment with the heat press and hold for the specified amount of time for the type of garment you are printing. For most fabrics the pressing time is about 30 seconds. For firm items the press time may be more like 60-90 seconds.

Remove
Remove the sublimation paper from the garment and then remove the garment from the heat press. Lay flat to cool.

FAQ

Q: What is the sublimation paper?

A: In short, sublimation paper is a special printing paper that absorbs and retains ink. When placed on a blank surface (such as a T-shirt, vinyl sheet, mouse pad, or other material) and heated, the sublimation paper will release ink onto the material. If you print with sublimation ink, it may cause clogging and other problems. Therefore, except for some printers that use Micro Piezo printheads such as Epson printers, most inkjet printers cannot perform sublimation projects.

Q: What kind of paper to use for sublimation?

A: What is Sublimation Paper? Which One is Best For Your Project ...
It's possible to use laser copy paper because it's formulated to withstand the high heat of your heat press. The question is if inkjet heat transfer paper can hold and release the ink well enough, however. The top results are what I think are the best sublimation paper — A-SUB 125G and A-SUB 105G.

Q: What happens if you use regular ink on sublimation paper?

A: You must completely flush the system. Reason being the color and chemical make up of the inks are not the same. So if you use regular ink and then put in sublimation your prints will come out wrong and the ink obviously doesnt bond to the substrate so you will make a mess.

Q: Can I do sublimation without a sublimation printer?

A: Can I sublimate without a sublimation printer? Yes! You can create a high-quality product without special sublimation printers. You can purchase printed sublimation transfer paper designs, use Infusible Ink, or draw with appropriate markers that will still last a long time!

Q: Do I need a special printer for sublimation paper?

A: Can I sublimate with any printer? No, you will need a special sublimation printer or converted inkjet printer along with special ink and sublimation transfer paper. You cannot sublimate with regular inkjet printing ink or regular paper.

Q: Can I put sublimation ink in any printer?

A: Inkjet printers that use a thermal printing head cannot be used for sublimation printing. As a result inkjet printers manufactured by Canon, Hewlett Packard (HP), Lexmark or Dell are not suitable. Printers that use a Micro Piezo printing head can be used for sublimation printing.

Q: What is better than sublimation?

A: Unlike sublimation, DTG printing is best used on natural fabrics like linen, cotton, bamboo, and related fabric blends. Why? The ink binds better with natural fabrics. Although natural fabrics are preferred when using DTG, this printing style can also be used on other types of fabrics.

Q: Can you do sublimation with an inkjet printer?

A: It is specifically designed for sublimation printing and requires special sublimation inks and a compatible printer to achieve the desired results. While an inkjet printer can be used for sublimation printing, it is crucial to ensure that it is compatible with sublimation ink.

Q: What do I need to know before buying a sublimation printer?

A: Quality, speed, and support are the top three things to look for in a sublimation printer. You'll also need good color profiles, which are sometimes made specifically for the substrate you're using. For example, if you're creating athletic apparel for collegiate teams — football, cheer, wrestling, etc.

Q: What type of printer do I need for sublimation printing?

A: Inkjet printer
You need a specialized sublimation printer or a converted inkjet printer for sublimation. Special ink is used with a special paper designed for sublimation. Inkjet printers are the ideal choice due to their heat-free piezoelectric printheads.

Q: Can you sublimate on a grey shirt?

A: You can sublimate on dark shirts by using heat transfer vinyl as the base layer. After pressing the HTV, you will transfer the sublimation print to it. Another way to sublimate on dark shirts is to use bleach on the area where you want the pattern to be.

Q: Do you need special ink for sublimation paper?

A: No, sublimation printing only works with special sublimation inks, regular inks won't work on the paper. Some people do convert their new inkjet printers to be a sublimation printer but this can only be done when the printer is brand new and has not printed anything yet. It still requires sublimation inks.

A: Sublimation printing requires a dye sublimation printer. If you can successfully convert your regular printer to a sublimation printer, you will be able to print with sublimation. It's worth noting that some regular printers (usually Epson inkjet printers) can be successfully converted to sublimation printing.

Q: What kind of cups can you sublimate on?

A: As long as the substrate includes polyester or a polymer coat, virtually anything can be transferred onto it with sublimation, including mugs. To be clear, you cannot use just any old mug for sublimation. The last thing you want is for your beautiful design to disappear in the dishwasher!

Q: Is it cheaper to do vinyl or sublimation?

A: Heat transfer vinyl is more affordable than sublimation printing. The initial cost of sublimation is higher since it requires special equipment, such as a sublimation printer, sublimation paper, and sublimation dyes or inks.

Q: Why would anyone use sublimation printing?

A: Some people also want to create personalized images on the surface of items like mugs and plates. The sublimation printing method can produce vivid designs on hardware items that can maintain vibrant colors even after washing.

Q: Can I use sublimation ink in my HP printer?

A: The easiest way to convert your HP printer into sublimation printer is by using an inkjet printer cartridge designed for sublimation printing. Let's have a look at that option first. The ink will produce high-quality gradation if the ink cartridge is designed to sublimate ink for a smooth fade.
